It is an automobile that uses a battery with an electric motor for propulsion. As compared to other vehicles, they are quieter and don’t emit exhaustion.

Types of Electric cars: (1)

Four types of electric cars are available. They are discussed below:

  • Battery electric vehicle (BEV)
  • Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV)
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)
  • Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV)

Battery Electric vehicle (BEV):

This vehicle is also known as an All-electric vehicle (AEV). An electric drive train and a battery are required to run this vehicle. Such types of vehicles lack ICE. The battery in the car stores back or charging when it is charged from the electricity grid station. Pack of the battery can be used to power one or more than one vehicle to run.

Components of battery electric vehicle:

  • Electric motor
  • Inverter
  • Battery
  • Drive train
  • Control module

Example of battery electric vehicle:

  • Tesla Model 3
  • Karma Ravera
  • Chevy spark
  • Toyota Rav40

Hybrid Electric vehicle (HEV):

The vehicles are also known as standard hybrid and parallel hybrid. It consists of an electric motor and ICE. To run such types of vehicles, an internal engine is provided energy from fuel or gasoline to run them. The motor is charged with electricity. Electric motor and engine combined to twirl the transmission that is used in driving the wheel. The difference between HEV and BEV is that HEV can be only charged with ICE or with the motion of the wheel or a combination of both. They lack a charging pot so batteries cannot be charged from outside such as the electric grid station.

Components of HEV:

Components of HEV are:

  • Electric motor
  • Engine
  • Pack of battery with controller and inverter
  • Tank of fuel
  • Control module

Examples of HEV:

Examples of hybrid electric vehicles are:

  • Toyota Prius Hybrid
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid
  • Honda Civic Hybrid

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV):

Hybrid with ICE and MOTOR both are known as a series hybrid. Choice of fuel is also available in all series of hybrid vehicles. These vehicles can be powered with conventional or alternative fuel and also with rechargeable batteries. Batteries in the vehicle can be easily charged by plugging into changing electrical grid stations or electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS). These vehicles can be run with two modes:

  • ALL-ELECTRIC MODE: in this mode car uses both battery and motor to run
  • HYBRID MODE: gasoline and electricity is required to run the vehicle.

Components of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle:

  • Battery charger if its on onboard mode
  • Electric motor
  • Engine
  • Fuel tank
  • Control module
  • Inverter
  • Battery

Examples of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles:

Following are the examples of PHEV:

  • Mini Cooper SE countryman
  • Audi A3 E Tron.
  • Fiat 500 E
  • Porsche Cayenne S E- Hybrid
  • Ford Fusion Energi
  • Hyundai Sonata
  • Volvo XC90 T8

Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV):

Commonly they are known as fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and zero-emission vehicles. Fuel cell technology is implied in such types to generate electricity and run the car. Chemical energy is directly converted into electrical energy in these types of vehicles.

Components of fuel cell electric vehicle:

  • Hydrogen storage tank
  • Stack of fuel cell
  • Electric motor
  • Battery along with converter and controller

Examples of fuel cell electric vehicles:

Some examples of fuel cell electric vehicles are as follows:

  • Toyota Mirai
  • Hyundai Tucson FCEV
  • HONDA clarity fuel cell
  • Hyundai Nexo
  • Riversimple Rasa
